Clash 100L v3

If you buy one thing

Wilson Clash 100L v3

S$379 · Wilson Singapore · RA 54 · 295 g

The softest frame on this list and the lightest of the soft ones. It gives when the ball hits it rather than passing the shock to your arm, and there is less of it to swing while you are still learning where the ball is going.

Stiff or soft. That's the choice.

A stiff frame sends the hit straight into your arm. A soft frame bends, so the shock goes into the frame instead. RA is how stiff it is — lower is softer, and anything under 58 is soft. That's the whole lesson. The rest of the numbers can wait until you can feel the difference.

The shortlist, softest first

Wilson Clash · the one I'd buy

The frame I actually play, in its Roland-Garros paint. Lowest vibration reading here at 127 Hz, so nothing reaches your arm. If a beginner buys one frame and keeps it three years, this is it.

If you want the most flexible frame here it is a Clash, and it is not close — RA 54 against 57 for the next softest thing in this list.

7 pts HL · 312 g strung · swingweight 308 · vibration 127 Hz · S$399 at Wilson Singapore

Wilson Clash · the lightest start

Same soft layup as the Clash above, with less of it to swing — 295 g strung and a 301 swingweight, so it comes round on its own while your technique is still forming.

If you want the most flexible frame here it is a Clash, and it is not close — RA 54 against 57 for the next softest thing in this list.

6 pts HL · 295 g strung · swingweight 301 · vibration 133 Hz · S$379 at Wilson Singapore

Yonex Muse · Yonex's soft frame

RA 55 and 123 Hz — the quietest frame on this list, and the only Yonex worth putting on it. If your arm is the reason you're reading this, this is the one.

Yonex builds stiff frames across the board — the next softest thing they make is a 97 sq in player's frame. The Muse is the exception, and it is a good one.

4 pts HL · 309 g strung · swingweight 311 · vibration 123 Hz · S$289 at Sportsshop SG

Head Gravity · if you're already athletic

The same RA 57 in a heavier frame with a 323 swingweight. More to swing, more when you're late — worth it only once you're hitting the middle most of the time.

Everything else Head makes is RA 60 and up, so the Gravity is the only family worth looking at if flex is what you came for.

2 pts HL · 312 g strung · swingweight 323 · vibration 137 Hz · S$369 at Sportsshop SG

Head Gravity · the easiest to live with

283 g with a 104 sq in head — mishits still land, which is most of what a first year is. Nothing to prove with this one.

Everything else Head makes is RA 60 and up, so the Gravity is the only family worth looking at if flex is what you came for.

2 pts HL · 283 g strung · swingweight 304 · vibration 130 Hz · S$289 at Sportsshop SG

Tecnifibre TFight · their friendliest

The lightest and most flexible Tecnifibre at 298 g and RA 63, and the biggest sweet spot on this list at 17.5 sq in.

Their line starts where the others stop — RA 63 is the floor across all twelve Tecnifibre frames measured. Worth saying plainly rather than quietly leaving them out.

5 pts HL · 298 g strung · swingweight 303 · vibration 145 Hz · S$219 at RacketHaus SG

Tecnifibre TF40 · the feel pick

RA 64 and 320 g — the control frame of the two. Buy it because you like the way it feels, not because it's kind to your arm.

Their line starts where the others stop — RA 63 is the floor across all twelve Tecnifibre frames measured. Worth saying plainly rather than quietly leaving them out.

3 pts HL · 320 g strung · swingweight 321 · vibration 143 Hz · S$279 at Sportsshop SG

The other columns, when you want them

Weight
What it weighs strung. Light swings easy, heavy stands up to a hard ball. All seven are 283–320 g, which is normal.
Head
How big the stringbed is. Bigger is more forgiving. All seven are 98–104 in², so this one you can ignore.
SW
Swingweight: how heavy it feels to swing, which is not what it weighs. Under about 310 is easy.
Vib
How fast the frame rings, in Hz. Lower is quieter on your arm — and it is the thing RA alone will not tell you.

When you outgrow it

01

Sell it on Carousell

Beginner frames are the easiest racquets to move here — cheap, common, and wanted by exactly the person you were two years ago. A Clash or a Gravity in decent condition goes in days. Restring it with cheap synthetic gut first: “freshly strung” fetches more than the strings cost. And don't throw it, or scrape the frame along the ground. Scuffs on the plastic bumper guard at the top of the hoop are free — that strip exists to be scraped, and a replacement set costs a few dollars, so change it before you wear through to the graphite. Scrapes anywhere else don't polish out, and they show up in every photo.

02

Keep it as the stringing spare

Your main frame sits at the stringer for two or three days, which is two or three sessions you'd otherwise miss. The frame you already own is cheaper than a second copy of your main, and it costs nothing to leave in the bag.

03

Keep it for the sore-arm days

The soft frame is your arm's day off. When your elbow is grumbling and you still want to hit, RA 54 and 127 Hz is what you take out. It also settles an argument: if the soreness follows you to the soft frame, the racquet was never the problem.

Strings

What to put in it

Strings are what actually touch the ball, so they matter as much as the frame. Before you have a preference of your own, there are only three questions.

What

One string, all the way through — a “full bed”. Not a hybrid. Two strings is a tuning trick for someone who already knows what they are tuning.

Which

Something soft. Synthetic gut if you are just hitting with friends, multifilament if you are taking lessons. Not polyester: it is stiff, and it is the one thing on this page that will hurt your arm while you are still learning to find the middle.

How tight

52 lbs. That is the middle of the range for a 100 in² frame, and the middle is where you want to start. Tighter feels dead and harsh — the classic beginner mistake — and looser is livelier but harder to keep in the court.

Mains — The north–south strings you hit along. About 70% of how the string bed behaves.
Crosses — The east–west strings, woven through the mains. The other ~30%.

The same string in both directions is a full bed, and that is what you want. Two different strings, one per direction, is a hybrid: a way to tune a frame once you know what you are tuning. The mains do most of the work, which is why the hybrid builder below starts with them.

Pick by level

1

Just hitting with friends

A few times a month, not chasing improvement yet

String
Synthetic gut
Tension
52 lbs
Gauge
16 (1.30 mm)

Soft and elastic, so the sweet spot feels bigger and the power comes free — and it is the least fussy thing you can put in a frame in this heat. Every brand's plays much the same, so pick it by colour.

2

Playing to get better

Weekly, maybe taking lessons — you want feedback

String
Multifilament
Tension
52 lbs
Gauge
16 (1.30 mm)

Softer than synthetic gut: more free power, and a much clearer feel at contact, which is how you learn what you did. Value: Wilson Sensation, Head Velocity MLT, Babolat Xcel. Step up: Wilson NXT, Tecnifibre NRG. Less durable, so restring on schedule.

Singapore

  • There is no winter to store a racket through here, so nothing gets a rest — heat and sweat are what kill strings, not cold. Heat speeds up tension loss and softens the bed; humidity is what murders natural gut.
  • Polyester is the one that goes dead fastest in this heat. Dead strings still look perfectly fine, so go by the calendar: restring as many times a year as you play a week. Twice a week means twice a year, whether or not anything snapped.
  • Keep the frame out of a hot car boot and out of the rain. If you ever string gut, a waterproof cover stops being optional.
  • Don't move to a full bed of polyester yet: it is stiff, the sweet spot shrinks, and the frame gets punishing. And don't sweat gauge — 16 for softer strings, 16L–17 for poly, nothing finer until you have a real preference.

Every string, measured
